Fighting with staves is a sport and an art form in many cultures ...
also in Medieval and Renaissance Europe, within all social groups.
The European quarterstaff was about 2 meters long and an excellent weapon - and a cheap one, therefore available to all. Most of the quarterstaff techniques are also good for spear fighting.
The quarterstaff is an extremely versatile weapon. Fighting mixes circular strikes from all angles with thrusts and jabs with the fore and aft end. One can also sweep at the opponents feet, throw him or her with a number of joint locks and manipulations using the staff for leverage – even strangle holds are possible. |
